Questions

What time is high tide in the Maldives today?

High water at Malé today is at 03:32 and 14:52, reaching +0.46 m relative to mean sea level. The tide runs a little earlier in the north and later in the south; today it turns at every atoll capital within about an hour of Malé.

What time is low tide in the Maldives today?

Low water at Malé today is at 09:28 and 21:24, down to −0.52 m relative to mean sea level. Today's range at Malé is 0.98 m.

How big is the tide in the Maldives?

Small. The range at Malé is typically under a metre and today it is 0.98 m between high and low water. That is why heights here are quoted about mean sea level rather than chart datum: about half of them are negative, and a range of 30 cm written as 0.15 m to 0.45 m would hide how little water actually moves.

How accurate are these tide times?

They come from EOT20, a global ocean tide model built from satellite altimetry, which is among the most accurate available in coastal waters. Checked against an independent model over 2,067 days the two agree to 3.5 cm and 15 minutes. It is an open-ocean model, so it does not capture what a shallow lagoon or a harbour does to the water, and it is not a navigational chart.

Why is it instant when other tide sites take a moment?

Nothing is fetched per island. Your browser downloads one small file of harmonic constants covering the whole country, then works out every curve itself. Changing island or date is arithmetic, not a request.

What is the tide measured against?

Mean sea level. A positive number means the water is above its average level and a negative one means below, so the figures are smaller than a tide table quoted against chart datum.

Can I use this for navigation?

No. It is a reference for planning — when a sandbank uncovers, when a reef pass is workable, when a harbour has water. Use official charts and your own judgement for navigation.

About these predictions

Tides are astronomy, so they can be computed years ahead from a set of harmonic constants. Ours come from EOT20, a global tide model built from three decades of satellite altimetry. Checked against an independent model over 2,067 days, the two agree to 3.5 cm and 15 minutes.

Two limits. The grid is about 14 km, so islands in the same atoll share an answer. And it is an open-ocean model, blind to what a shallow lagoon or a harbour entrance does to the water.

For planning, not for navigation.
